Kiss Your Babies to Keep Them Healthy

Congratulations Elizabeth W.!  You were randomly selected through the Gleam giveaway app as the winner.  I have emailed you and you have 48 hours to respond before I select a new winner.

I was at the library the other day when the sweet librarian says to my baby “Ooooh, you’re so cute! I just want to eat you up. Mmm.  And sop you up with a biscuit!”

Weird, no?  But I kind of get it.  My baby?  She’s adorable and I have this instinctive urge to, well, not to eat her…but kiss her a billion times a day.  And I’m not kidding when I say it’s an urge…I literally can’t hold her without kissing her every few seconds.

Kiss your babies and eat local

Can any of your other mothers out there relate?  Of course you can!  But have you ever noticed that it’s more of a mom thing than a dad thing?  Sure, my husband kisses our little bubs aplenty, but he doesn’t seem to have quite the drive to smother them with smooches as I do.

Turns out, that’s perfectly normal!

I wrote about this before in this article, but it’s worth reiterating.  Breastmilk acts as custom-ordered immune guard for your baby.  When a mom interacts with her environment, her body will automatically create antibodies for any germs she encounters.  These antibodies are then passed on to the baby through breastmilk, thereby offering the little one a great measure of protection against sickness.

(Y’all, can I just press pause on the breastfeeding stuff and comment on my hair?  I love me some natural beauty products, but not all of them are well…umm, good.  Like the shampoo I used the morning of this photo session.  Ugh…I felt like I was slathering lotion in my hair. Lotion that wouldn’t wash out…but I didn’t realize it until after we’d taken all the pictures.  If you want proof that my hair doesn’t always look this sorry, check out this post.)

Anyway, if you’re a mom, and you find yourself with an insatiable desire to kiss your baby all day long, smooch away! That desire is actually a biologically driven instinct with a very important purpose.  By kissing your baby, you’re sampling the pathogens on her skin and in her environment and signaling your breast milk to produce the necessary antibodies to protect your baby.  (source)

You read that right, you’re kissing your babies to keep them healthy!

Isn’t it amazing how awesome God created breastfeeding?

To celebrate my love for breastfeeding, I’m partnering with Melissa from My Doula Made It for this sweet little giveaway.  One Best of Baby winner will get an “Eat Local” onesie and t-shirt from Melissa’s Etsy shop. (Available in different colors and sizes, though some colors/sizes may be limited).

You can read more about Melissa on her doula website, but here is a little snippet:

Melissa is a Certified Birth Doula in Orillia with DONA International, and a mother of two. She has been a Doula for over 5 years and attended 25+ births.  With plans to go on to become a Lactation Consultant, she is a breast feeding advocate.  Through her Etsy store My Doula Made It, she expresses her creativity and shares her, and other Doula’s, hand made wares.

So mamas, keep on kissing your babies and then celebrate the awesomeness of breastfeeding with these shirts. If you don’t want to take your chances on winning, Melissa is also offering a 15% off any purchase over $20 CAD (about $17 USD) using code BESTOFBABYLOVE.

The Giveaway I Really Want To Win For MYSELF – Microsoft Surface

I did it…I canceled my gym membership and bought a treadmill to put in my basement.  The idea is that since I only ever use the treadmills at the gym, I’ll save money in the long run by just getting a treadmill for at home use.  Bonus points for only spending $35 on it at a yard sale (YES.  I bought a $1,000 treadmill for $35 buckaroos.)

Now all I need is a tablet to prop up on my treadmill so I can watch shows while running…because treadmill running is booooring. Anyway, while I try and also find a tablet for $35 at a yard sale (or not), I’ll dream about owning one of these babies…but in the meantime, here’s YOUR chance to win 🙂

Is Your Baby’s Teether Toxic?

Congratulations Jess B. and Jessica E. for winning the wooden teethers (randomly assigned to a prize from Muley Baby and In Between the Raindrop respectively).  Winners have been emailed and have 48 hours to respond before a new winner(s) is drawn.Teething Solutions

You want to know what will make you want to run for the hills?  As in, literally sell your possessions, run for the hills, and set up camp shunning all modern day goods and living only off the land?

Researching the toxic chemical found in baby toys.  Yes, BABY TOYS.  Lead?  Not just for paint in old houses.  BPA?  Not just in plastic bottles.  Pthalates, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and organotin compounds?  Not just for…well chemistry books that we don’t understand.

All of these (and MORE!) can be found in your baby’s toys…you know, the ones they immediately bring to their mouth as soon as they get their hands on them.  To their MOUTH.  And if you knew the negative side-effects these chemicals can have on us, well, like I said you’d be running for the hills in an effort to avoid anything that’s ever been manufactured ever again.

I know I sound dramatic, but these chemicals are no joke.  They’ve been linked to reproductive issues, developmental disabilities, cancer, immune deficiencies, and more. (source) Rocks and sticks sound like great toys, now don’t they?

Ok, realistically, I know I can’t feasibly protect my children from all of these awful chemicals (I’d like to rant about how toy makers shouldn’t be making poisonous toys, but it’d be a waste of breath…we all know a lot of them just care about money and not our kids).  Anyway, I know I can’t protect them from everything, but there are certain things I can be intentionally cautious about.  At the top of my list? Teethers.

If I’m buying a product that is intended to go in my baby’s mouth, it better be non-toxic.  For me, it was especially important that I find good, non-toxic, natural teethers (since they chew on them so much). And is there anything more natural than wood?  I mean, there’s not even any explaining I need to do…it’s just…wood.  I searched and searched and I found two Etsy shops that had everything I wanted in a wooden teether:

1) made of wood (duh?)

2) unfinished (no chemicals or any other ingredients…just pure wood!)

3) something my baby would enjoy chewing (well, the last criteria wasn’t too hard to meet).

Teething Solutions

The first teether is by Muley Baby.  It’s an adorable spin on the traditional teething ring featuring wooden beads and 100% cotton fabric.  Each bead is held in place by a secure knot to eliminate the risk of the beads coming loose. These teethers also come in “boy” and gender neutral colors.  Oh, and they make a pretty cute bracelet for mama!

Sharelle from Muley Baby is a stay-at-home mama of a 3 year-old girl and 8 month-old boy.  After her youngest had to be hospitalized, Sharelle and her family were faced with a number of bills. In an attempt to offset the cost of medical care, she started making these adorable teethers!

Teether 6

The second teether is a Mama Rocks necklace by In Between The Raindrop.  It doubles as both a teething and nursing necklace (read more here if you want to know why I love nursing necklaces).  It’s made from a cotton cord and geometric unfinished maple wood beads.  The teether stays on mama and gives your baby something to chew on and fiddle with as he or she keeps close to you.  It’s jewelry that you can wear and that your baby can yank/chew/slobber on to her heart’s content.  (Wish I’d had one of these sooner…maybe my dolly wouldn’t have broken my favorite necklace a few months back!)

Teething Solutions

Amanda from In Between The Raindrop is a mommy of three (two boys and a girl), aged four, three and 15 months. She started her business when she became frustrated with her jewelry always breaking or just not being functional in her life.  She took matters into her own hands and now makes functional, affordable, and super cute products that make breastfeeding, baby wearing and just all around entertainment of the baby easier.

Teether 7

Both Muley Baby and In Between The Raindrop are generously giving away a teether to 2 lucky Best of Baby readers. (Muley Baby is offering a Fox themed teething ring to one US winner and In Between the Raindrop is offering a silicone teething necklace or accessory or wooden crochet necklace to one US or Canadian winner) That’s 2 winners folks! Winners will be randomly selected and assigned to a teether. Check out the shops and then enter below!

And if you don’t want to take your chance on winning, both shops are generously offering a discount during the course of the giveaway.  Use Foxy15 at Muley Baby shop (US only) and BOB15 in In Between The Raindrop  (US and Canada).

(Note: Babies should not be left to play with these necklaces.  Although they are teethers, they are for mamas to wear, not for babies to play with on their own.  This can pose a strangulation hazard.)
Iulia from Best of Baby was given this necklace in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are her own.  No other bloggers promoting this giveaway were compensated in any way.
